Welcome to the weirdest dinner party of the year.
Team Lazerbeam, the “game band” from Cape Town behind quirky, heartfelt indie experiences, has teamed up with none other than Devolver Digital (publishers of Cult of the Lamb and Inscryption) to unleash Shroom and Gloom on Steam — and it’s equal parts surreal, strategic, and just a little bit unhinged.
Shroom and Gloom is a first-person roguelike double-deckbuilder (yes, you read that right). You’ll be hacking, slashing, and roasting your way through dungeons teeming with cursed mushrooms and culinary possibilities. Fight with one deck, explore and mutate your arsenal with another. And when things get hairy? Why block when you can eat your enemies instead?
🍄 Key Features:
- Build two distinct decks: combat and exploration
- Melt your eyeballs with gorgeous hand-drawn art and slick 3D spaces
- Mutate your cards into game-breaking mega-combos
- Cook your enemies into delicious, health-restoring soups
But don’t be fooled by the whimsy — beneath the humor and mushrooms lies a deeply ambitious indie title. Born from a game jam and nourished over years of part-time passion, Shroom and Gloom is the culmination of Team Lazerbeam’s dream to create one of the most dazzling, genre-defining deckbuilders around.
And the best part?
There’s a free demo out now on Steam. Grab it, slay some shrooms, and maybe throw a glowing review their way. The team is all-in on community feedback, and you can follow the development over on their Discord, and make sure to Wishlist on Steam! While you’re here, check out the official announcement trailer:
Team Lazerbeam may have started with a janky game jam prototype, but with Devolver at their side and a spore-spreading community behind them, this one’s destined to be a cult classic. Welcome to the gloom, friends.
