In The Outlast Trials, where paranoia is just another form of self-preservation, one enemy stands out for its psychological brutality: The Imposters.

Disguised in latex masks and corpse-scavenged clothing, these enemies don’t charge at you from the dark. They blend in. They watch. And then they strike.

Who Are The Imposters?

Known formally as part of the Experimental Population, the Imposters were designed under Project Lathe, led by Dr. Easterman. Their mission? Shatter any remaining sense of trust between Reagents.

By mimicking Reagents’ movements, posture, and even behaviors, these monsters sow chaos in the most intimate way possible: betrayal. Reagents report watching a “teammate” walk beside them… only to be stabbed moments later with a jagged, makeshift knife, lovingly honed from glass or metal scraps.

Born From Paranoia

According to a Murkoff Case File, the Imposters are stripped of name, history, and even clothing — left to reconstruct an identity from whatever they can steal. Their latex masks are unsettlingly familiar. Their behavior? Like kids playing pretend… except every game ends in bloodshed.

Emotionally, they’re unstable. They crave praise. They fear failure. And most dangerously of all — they delight in deception.

“The subject displays pleasure when its deception is successful, and distress when it fails. Dr. Easterman encouraged this emotional feedback to sharpen their instincts.” – Murkoff Case File excerpt

How to Spot The Imposters

Reagents must rely on subtle cues to survive:

  • Name tags: Check your squad’s names regularly.
  • Movement: Imposters move erratically or stalk with odd pacing.
  • Behavior: If someone doesn’t interact or help out, beware.

Combat-wise, bottles, bricks, and stun rigs can force them into a retreat — but don’t count on overpowering them with brute force alone. Your best weapon? Communication.

Trust is a Liability

The Imposters aren’t just another threat. They’re a twisted reflection of the player — an enemy that doesn’t attack your health bar, but your sense of safety. And in a game like The Outlast Trials, that’s deadlier than any monster.

When they’re in the trial with you, assume nothing. Watch everyone. Listen carefully. And above all — trust no one.
